Cooling tower pumps replaced after 20 years of faithful service

After more than twenty years of loyal service, two long-coupled Sihi process pumps were due for replacement. They were part of a redundant setup: one pump runs 24/7, the second stands ready as a backup.

Despite their years of reliable service, the pumps no longer met current requirements for energy efficiency and smart control. Moreover, they ran constantly at full power, regardless of the actual cooling demand.

Three requirements were central to the pump selection.

Requirement 1: retain existing pipework
We opted for a 1-to-1 replacement with a pump whose connection dimensions fully match the old setup. In combination with a custom-made stainless steel base plate, the new installation could be seamlessly integrated.

Requirement 2: easy to maintain
Instead of the longitudinally coupled design, we opted for a short-coupled pump. It is more cost-effective to purchase, easier to maintain (no alignment work required between pump and motor), and takes up less space.

Requirement 3: future-proof
With modern Grundfos frequency converters and energy-efficient pumps, the system is ready for the future: in terms of performance, sustainability, monitoring, and ease of maintenance.

The customer has a reliable cooling water supply that is more energy-efficient and easier to maintain. The new pumps automatically adapt to the cooling demand: at lower production or lower outdoor temperatures, they run more quietly and consume less energy.
